| 范文 | 李明华 Nowadays， with the development of modern and advanced science and technology，Chinese people are working hard to make China a developed country and China is a developing country，as is known to all. This makes it necessary for our country to train people with higher education as many as possible，to learn a great deal from those who are over us in every field all over the world. So，，the most widely-used language in the world—English is getting more important and required to be learnt in middle schools throughout the country. Considering the present situation，the aim of English teaching in middle schools in our country，according to the teaching syllabus，is to train the students to listen，speak，read and write，to enable them to master the basic skills of speaking and writing in practice，to lay particular emphasis on the students reading skill so as to pave the way for their further learning and using the language properly. Specifically，in high schools，the students are required to master the basic skills of reading and writing in practice， to learn and be able to use more than 2000 words along with a certain number of phrases and idioms to be able to read independently the popular materials easier than the texts with the help of a dictionary. In recent years， even higher requirements in reading comprehension have been put forward according to the syllabus of National Matriculation English Test. Seeing that the skill of reading is so important that it has been a problem being discussed among the teachers—how to improve the students reading comprehension， in this article，Ill try to give my advice， as I have experienced， on how to train the students to read extensively and improve their reading comprehension in high school. 1. The necessity and value of extensive reading First of all， we should take a correct attitude towards extensive reading. As everybody knows， a certain skill cannot be gained without a great deal of practice. So our students should not limit their reading only to one or two sets of textbooks. They must read more extensively to broaden their knowledge of areas where English reading will help them to turn all this into realities. It can help them to read several times of books compared with that of reading intensively within a certain time. And to know more is the very purpose of the students learning to read. So we can say that extensive reading is also a remedy for the limitation in intensive reading. Usually， intensive is very dull， but extensive reading will make up for this， for there are many books or materials written for tasting， and enjoyment as well. Moreover， extensive reading will help the students to reinforce the impression on what they have learned in intensive reading because the words， the grammar and the many other things in the materials will frequently reappear. 2. Selecting appropriate extensive reading materials According to psychologists， interest is very important in whatever a student is doing. So， while preparing extensive reading materials for the students， we should keep the following in mind：（1）Arousing the students interest and enthusiasm as reading is what we should take into consideration first. The materials must be relevant to the interests of the students. They should be interesting and attractively presented in order to increase the students motivation.（2）A good teacher should be the best judge of what for the students are going to read extensively. He should be able to prove what the students are going to read to be appropriate. The materials must be within the students level of proficiency. Help the student to overcome psychological apprehension. Make them feel confident that they can understand what they are reading only if theyll have a strong will to try .The progression should not be too fast at first. The materials should be presented step by step with the proceeding of difficult vocabulary and sentence structure. 3. In extensive reading class， special attention should be paid to cultivating the students reading comprehension and reinforcing what they have learnt before. Extensive reading is quite different from intensive reading. In intensive reading class， the teacher will mainly lead the student to learn grammar from simple to difficult rules， such as：syntax，collocation，rhetoric and words. While in extensive reading class， according to the main requirements of the reading comprehension tests at present， we should lay particular emphasis on cultivating the students extensive reading comprehension such as （1）Mastering the as well as the facts and details exposing the purport and gist.（2）Understanding not only the literal meaning but also the inference of the idea taken literally， also including the attitude and intention of the writer， etc.（3）Understanding not only the meaning of a certain sentence or paragraph， but the logical relationship of the whole passage and based on it carrying out reasoning and judgment.（4）Not only understanding the contents in accordance with the information offered by the materials but also understanding them related to the common knowledge required for the students out of the materials， etc. So， considering what is required above， in my opinion， our purpose of giving extensive reading classes should be how to cultivate and improve the students reading comprehension. And while giving extensive reading classes， we should adopt the heuristic method. We should require the students to read what we have prepared for them before class all by themselves， and in class well check their reading results in different ways by asking them to answer some questions according to the passages that they have just read， tell right from wrong， analyze phrases， summarize the paragraphs or tell the main ideas or intended meaning .If there are some difficult patterns or grammatical rules in the reading materials， ask the students to try their best to solve them with the teachers advice sometimes. In this way we can cultivate the students abilities to analyze and solve problems by themselves. We should encourage them to discuss and think the materials or problems over boldly then present their own thoughts. All these will help to bring the initiative of the students into full play and make the classes lively and interesting. These can also be beneficial to cultivating the students the ability to think things out for themselves. Thus， we cannot only foster the students ability to study on their own but also help them to reinforce what they have learnt before. |
