    1. Introduction

This paper will analysize the two translation strategies, the Jerome model and the Horace model,in the application of translating idiom.Using the two modes in English-Chinese translation,we can combine the cultural background and context of the target language,to achieve the purpose of translation more efficiently. The translator can pay more attention to this view in which the translator can express the main idea of the original text when using the Jerome model and the Horace model to translate.

    2. The Application of the Two Models in IdiomTranslation

We can take the idiom translation as an example.Due to the differences in language culture, what can be explained may not be clearly explained or easily to understand. Therefore,at this time, the translation can not only follow the Jerome model, but connect the Horace model,so that the translation is more idiomatic and easier to be comprehended by the reader.

    2.1 Chinese into English translation

    1)“一箭双雕”

The Jerome model:“One arrow and two birds.”

The Horace model:“Use the less thing to get bigger success.”

The relative idiom in English is“Killing two birds with one stone.”

    2)“对牛弹琴”

The Jerome model:“Play the piano at the front of cow.”

The Horace model:“It is hard to make one understand who is freshman for your talking.”

The relative idiom in English is“Cast pearls before a swine.”

To make the reader, whose source language is not Chinese, understand the idiom, the translator should combine the two strategies. If there is no corresponding idiom,it is best to adopt the Horace model, but the translated words and the meaning should be consistent with the cultural background of the target language.

    2.2 English into Chinese translation

If the translator uses the literal translation to translate the Chinese idiom,Western readers will not know what the true meaning in it;if uses the free translation, the translator will insert characters and story plots,Chinese idiom can find multiple correspondences in English idioms, and an English idiom can also find multiple correspondences in Chinese idioms. For example:

The Jerome model: 1) True gold fears no fire.真金不怕火;2) Barking dogs dont bite.吠犬不咬人。

The Horace model: 1) Better bend than break.委曲求全;2) Care killed a cat. 忧能伤人。

    3. A Comparison of the Jerome Model and the Horace Model

The Jerome mode maintains both the original content and the original structure, while the Horace mode only keeps the content of the original text, but does not maintain the original structure. The Jerome model is faithful to the original content and conforms to the language and stylistic structure of the original text. The translation of cultural and linguistic information requires the Horace model.

Compared with the Jerome model, the Horace model is better in practical using.Whereas, the Jerome model is more appropriate in translating when the translator combines the culture background of the target language. The Jerome model and the Horace model have their own advantages. When combined with the cultural background and context, they also have their own disadvantages in translation.

    4. Conclusion

There are some aspects of strengths and shortages existing in the Jerome model and the Horace model with the point of development in modern times. If we can combine the text with the concrete condition, the two translation model can achieve the best translation effect finally.Although both the Jerome model and the Horace model follow the rule of“faithfulness”,they have different criteria of“faithfulness”,frankly speaking. The two strategies are good for translation.Just like the English-Chinese translation, we can use the two model to transform to make the recipient understand easily.
