Research on the core vocational abilities for English speaking competition in higher vocational coll
【Abstract】English speaking competition, as the only English competition among the other competitions, is highly favored by vocational colleges and enterprises and has become the key factor for educational management and teaching evaluation institution to measure the English teaching quality among the higher vocational colleges. The participating colleges pay high attention to the competition; investigate many qualified teachers and even massive financial supports. teachers should focus on the long-term tutorship and benefit students with effective method which is perpetually advantageous.

The English speaking competition has inspected students comprehensive qualities which are core professional abilities in workplace circumstance. Hence teachers should focus on long-term cultivation and ability training. There are three steps of speaking competition assistance basic on the cultivation of core professional ability.
There should be three stages of the whole assistance: First stage: knowledge accumulation, foundation consolidation. Second stage:Knowledge systematization and ability cultivation. Third stage: techniques training, practical improvements. The concrete implementation plans are shown as fellows.
1. First stage: Knowledge accumulation and Foundation consolidation. If there is no amount of quantitative accumulation, it is hard to make a progress of qualitative breakthrough. Teachers should start competition assistance with the foundation which could consolidate the base of English knowledge and information storage by spending enough time on it.
Due to the dominant position that pronunciation and intonation possess, they are naturally ranked among the prominent marking criteria. In this stage, students ability of listening, pronunciation and expression will be improved by immersion teaching method of providing them with classic audiovisuals such as ‘American Idol, VOA, CRI and some American films. It is good choice for students to imitate the pronunciation of actors. In allusion to students weakness like too-fast speaking, over-formal oral expression, teacher should make a targeted training.
2. Second stage: Knowledge systematization and ability cultivation. After the accumulation of the first stage, students knowledge reserve and language base have improved increasingly. The main task of the second stage should be systematize knowledge and improve comprehensive ability. This will in some extent tie up students thought, having no advantage of fostering creative thinking.
3. Third stage: Techniques training and Practical improvements. The national higher vocational college English speaking competition is a high level competition, the role of technique application cannot be underestimated. As in the debate stage, the skills training of debate are crucial. For example, at the beginning and end, student should use rhetorical and exclamatory sentences to make the language more powerful. In the debate, how to take the initiative position and the time to speak more; When you miss a question, how to deal with it; how to find the breakthrough point when the fellow debater is constantly expounding their own opinions. The training of various imaginary situations is intended to improve students strain ability. In addition, the proper use of body language, eye contact in actual communication cannot be ignored.
The so-called practical training, it is firstly to train the students how to react in the real workplace circumstance. The basic task of oral expression is communication, and speaking English competition is actually testing the ability of communication. The use of communicative theory expend the examining content of oral competition from simple language knowledge to semantic, stylistic, linguistic domain and even social culture, it attaches importance to the examination of context and discourse.
Conclusion
According to the original questions of previous competitions, students need to find out the problems which should be emphasized strongly by their tutor. Information processing, problem solving and communication skills are the ultimate goal of training.
All in all, the goal of the national vocational skills competition is to play the role of the vane and role of model, to guide the teaching reform of various colleges to the efforts of “advocating the skilled person not those who only has university diploma”. The concept and plan of English speaking competition should be based on the ability, promoting learning, teaching and improvements by competition.
